Friday, January 18, 2008 Y 9:35 PM AHHHHHHHHHH!!! BACK FROM OBS!!! ohman. I miss home so much and i miss my mum's food so much and i miss civilisation! We practically screamed when we saw hdb flats when the bus turned into Punggol. threeten is one big bunch of cool soundmakers. We were split into two watches, Raleigh and Raffles, of which i belonged to the former. OBS was physically exhausting and tiring and itchy (think sandflies), but there were really tons of great bonding opportunities and crazy song/cheer/rap sessions which we all thoroughly enjoyed. 310/Raleigh is love mann. warning: this post is crazily long Day One Was supposed to pick huiyi up and rush to school and be like super early butbutbut, I turned up real late + huge trafffic jam so we were late in the end ): sorry huiyi. and I'm so sorry about losing huiyi's wet shoes. ARH. i will buy another pair. PROMISE! Anyway, we took a bus then a ferry to ubin. Then, we were assigned to our groups and our instructor was Chew Yien, who is the prettiest woman on earth. Well, at least according to herself and to Raleigh. haha. Then we did other dry stuff like checking tents and equipment. We did a trust run and some climbing practices. The food on the first day was kinda screwed but we were so hungry that it tasted strangely delicious. Then we pitched our tents and slept in fours and threes. I slept with marge and bonian and we were like laughing at nothing, then laughing at the fact that we were laughing at nothing. sounds dumb but it was really hilarious. There's a reason why laughing is proven to be a social activity. And, we told jokes and bonian, being typical bobo, took real long to comprehend the jokes. Day Two We woke up at 500 am but were late for meeting yien at 555am. We did this PT which was really funny, and involved a lot of shuffling feet, then cooldown had to count in different languages. We did more obsey stuff like rock climbing which was kindof bleh since we did it in school last year, and this rock wall is freakin hard. But, we had so much fun learning the tamil 1to10 from Nandita, and teaching her how to sing lao shu ai da mi! Then, we changed into wet attire for kayaking basics. Capsizing the kayak was kinda fun. haha. even though water went into my ears. Then, we got freaked out at sea cos we saw lightning, then zann told us to go kayak to this strange island thing that has this real short beach. and lots of vegetation. Turns out only me wufan marge and panyue actually kayaked there then i wrote 'Raleigh kayaking expedition OBS' on the beach and we had to go back cos there was some strange misunderstanding and we weren't supposed to kayak there after all. Then, it started pouring, and we all ran into the boat shed and had a high singing cum cheering session. It was high lightning risk so we didn't sleep in tents, instead, slept in multi purpose hall. It was FREEZING. And me mansi nat marge and liqi ended up sharing a poncho with a soundly asleep kyungtae who wasn't even aware we were stealing her poncho surface area. hahaha! Day Three Woke up early in preparation for kayaking expedition. Zann was our marvellous navigator. I realised that i didn't have my glasses hooks and so I decided to not wear my glasses after all. Kayaking killed my arms. It started out fine, fun and exciting, but once I lost my bottle somewhere near ubin village jetty i started tearing my hair out over turning the kayak in the proper direction. At one point it was really shallow water and barely covered our oars. It was somewhere near Chek Jawa I think, and it really irritated me not being able to paddle properly. Then these flying fish flew over zann's head and it was really hilarious, and zann was totally freaking out cos one of the fish hit her shoulder. hahaha! We were all trying to persuade her that its a once in a lifetime kind of experience, to no avail. Then at some point of time my arms were like numb and i felt mechanical, like just mechanically rowing and rowing. I was thinking again and again, I JUST WANNA REACH THERE! Then at this point of time, we got the kayak stuck inbetween two kelong houses, and i have no idea why i couldnt get it out. I'm real glad that some watchmates actually waited up for us. When we finally reached the campsite we were all tired, sweaty, salty and sunburnt (for me). And, we still had to help unload bags and boxes and horrible jerricans. We then set up our tents which Nandita commented reminded her of one word: saggy. I shall not attempt to elaborate. The instructors promised that if we set up our tents quickly we would be able to go to this mystical place with clean water. In front of where we pitched our tents, there was this drain and the water was actually clean. Marge and I followed it to the source and we concluded that there was the place we would be going to. Guess what, we were so right. It turned out to be a quarry with freshwater, rainwater. We jumped into the quarry and thrashed about with our life jackets, and had yet another high singing, cheering session. It was real fun mann. Then we went back to change and wash our feet + clothes in the drain with clean quarry water. Marge and I slept with Nandita and Natgoh this time, and we had so much fun telling lame ghost stories and lamer jokes. And surprise, surprise, we were laughing hysterically once again. In summary, quoting marge, anyone who sleeps with marge and I will have no chance of a good night's sleep cos she will be too preoccupied laughing. Day Four Mission of the day was to trek to various spots in Pulau Ubin, and finally to our campsite. Day four was so incredibly tiring. We were singing songs like national day songs and dedication to keep spirits up even at the start of the journey. We trekked from the campsite to the highest point in Ubin, which was a killer to climb, but had a beautiful view from the top. Could see an entire nice blue quarry, and when you shouted out loud, there would be an echo resonating. Very cool. Then, we had our lunch at the foot of the hill and continued, this time with me and Marge as the navigators. We had a sense of responsibility to stay energetic and encouraging, so we were getting really high with the aid of zann, and we were cheering like crazy and singing like the world was gonna crumble anytime. And then i started repeating this line "Raleigh, tonight, we're gonna have a feast" then marge and zann added more and more lines until it could actually become a song. Anyway, after a long long trek, we finally reached destination no.2, which was the 'shopping centre', which i doubt even exists. Cos we were late, we had to do a forfeit, which went like this. Everyone had to hold a pebble with their right hand, throw it to the friend on the right. Then, we had to catch it with our right hand simultaeneously. We discovered that one stone was around for so long, and that it hadn't touched the floor at all. It's just amazing. We decided to crown it the holy title of the miraculous stone. We then came up with this hummmmm to like, cleanse and calm our spirits. Then we tried and it SUCCEEDED! everyone was so elated mann. We were screaming and shouting in joy. We then proceeded to continue with our trek. Then, Marge and I saw this gate, and we screamed, cos we thought that it was camp2, then we went through and we saw CAMP TWO!! Oh boy, we screamed and pretty soon we were all screaming hysterically. That was the last night in Ubin, and the dinner was good man, only minor flaw is that it was freakin sandy cos we cooked by the beach. And then we watched the sunset which was beautifully pink, hence we called it Mr. Pinky. We once again had another super high session of rapping and songs. It was so damn fun man. And then it rained once more and there was lightning risk once more and we slept in the boat shed this time. This time, we were seriously too tired to laugh. hahaha. Day Five Last day! we woke up early for morning circle and for JETTY JUMPING. I had stupidly thrown my shoes away, so had to borrow from huiyi. Unfortunately, the shoes were a tad big, so once i jumped in, it sank right to the bottom of the deep blue sea. Jetty jumping seemed kinda scary at first but its real fun when you've done it. You basically walk off this plank that extends over the sea, then jump off the plank with, of course, life jackts. And after a quick shower, and circle and souvenir shopping it was TIME FOR HOME! We sat at the jetty waiting for the boat, and took photos with zann's phone. Going back was one more crazy singing session, and boy, its a wonder our bus didn't tilt and vibrate with sound. Once I got into the canteen, i immediately bought a bottle of water to hydrate myself. IN CONCLUSION OBS was unexpectedly not as bad as I expected, and it allowed us to really bond within 310, so i have absolutely no regrets attending it. |
