I've rediscovered the Joy of Reading.

Started reading The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy yesterday.Till now, I'm not quite sure what the plot of the story is. But I have to admit the writing is beautiful. Beautifully fractured. I decided to stick post-its to mark out the chunks of text I like. And though I don't quite understand where this story is going, it doesn't bore me. It intrigues me, even. It's not the normal kind of novel I go for but youknowwhat? I think this is going to become one of my favourite books. I'll find out.

The blurb at the back doesn't give much clue what to expect.

"They all crossed into forbidden territory. They all tampered with the laws that
lay down who should be loved, and how. And how much."

That's all it took to make me buy the book. And of course, a book like that should be worth more than 6 bucks and I knew that too.

And now for some lovely chunks of text.

On the indifferent, despairing look in a girl's eyes:
"That Big God howled like a hot wind, and demanded obsience. Then Small God,
(cosy, contained, private and limited)came away casually, laughing at his own
temerity. Inured by the confirmation of his own consequence, he became resilient
and truly indifferent. Nothing mattered much. And the less it mattered, the less
it mattered. It was never important enough. Because Worse Things had happened.

So Small God laughed a hollow laugh, and skipped away cheerfully. Like a
rich boy in small shorts. He whistled, kicked stones. The source of his brittle
elation was the relative smallness of his misfortune. He climbed into people's
eyes and became an exasperating expression."

Chacko, on explaining their history to the children:
"Our dreams have been doctored. We belong nowhere, We sail unanchored on
troubled seas. We may never be allowed ashore. Our sorrows will never be sad
enough. Our joys never happy enough. Our dreams never big enough. Our lives
never important enough. To matter."

160th post

Okay I realised I didn't look out for the 100th post or 150th post so 160th, here I come.

Lit PT was horrendous. My Singaporean Short Story was font size 11, 4 pages long but had practically no plot to speak of. If it was any consolation to me, I wasn't the only one griping about my story today.

Sec 4 life has been hectic hectic hectic tothemax.
And I haven't been eating recess or lunch regularly.

Gosh it actually kinda feels like my life is spiralling out of control. Or you could look at it in another way. My life is TOO CONTROLLED. It has become a routine. Monday Tuesday Wednesday reach home close to 8, eat, work and get distracted by stuff till I sleep around 12 - 1 (i know i need to sleep earlier) then wake up at 6 and go to school. Thursday is my only free after school day and even then I don't manage to catch up much on work cos whenever I reach home on Thursdays, I'm too bushed to work. I always, always fall straight asleep. Friday is math tuition day, my weekly enlightenment hour. Saturdays are technically free but THINGS KEEP CROPPING UP. Sunday is Aspen then home to complete MORE work.

I need a life.

The sad thing is, I am NOT working hard enough. I am lazy, unmotivated and easily distracted.

Sigh.

Lethargy.

It's been awhile.

My life's been pretty hectic. I don't quite understand how come I can't seem to find the time or energy to blog nowadays but I shall make time.
Lists are always good. Let's start with a few lists.

Three things I've learnt this week:
1) Gossip spreads REALLY FAST in RG
2) Facebook is a dangerous place
3) The world is TINY. MICROSCOPIC even. WHY does everybody know everybody?

Three things I need to do over the weekend:
1) REST.
2) Do something productive and academically based
3) Get started on Dwen An proposal!

Three things I might do by the end of this month:
1) Revamp this blog with a new skin. It's been eons.
2) Switch to livejournal or xanga
3) Start getting active on Twitter

Three wishes I desperately hope will come true:
1) My external hard disk will miraculously be revived and all my pictures will be retrieved.
2) The next Tribune issue is printed within the next 2 weeks.
3) Mystery issue to be a roaring success. We are totally depending on this for SPH competition.

Three things I'm looking forward to:
1) JUNE HOLIDAYS
2) Make that December hols
3) Dwen An in July. Note, looking forward to the actual period of time they're here, not the preparation process, aka now.

Three extremely overdue things I NEED TO START ON.
1) Letter to Pris Yong (about 6 months overdue)
2) Chinese O-level mock paper (About 1 week overdue)
3) Watch Shiying's POTC 3 so I can return the disc to her asap.

Three things I am going to dream of tonight:
1) Chen Lao Shi yelling at me: O LEVEL KAO JUAN ZAI NA LI!
2) The Crime issue turns out to be horrific and we need to redo everything.
3) Nothing (preferable to above two options)

And now I shall sleep and see what happens.
